VW teases a new compact SUV model
Volkswagen early September teased a new compact SUV it plans to reveal October 13. In the 13-second teaser, we get to see — almost nothing. The headlights are shining right at the camera, and we can barely make out any of the details of the vehicle they’re attached to.
One thing we can tell is it will have a daytime running light bar that runs from the headlights to the centre of the grille, presumably where the classic ‘VW’ badge sits.
“We’re excited to share the first glimpse of the newest member of the Volkswagen family,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “Great things come in small packages, as Volkswagen has proven throughout the years with its iconic Beetle, Golf and Jetta. This next car will be no exception.”
The small SUV is part of VW’s latest plan to release as many SUVs as possible, apparently. Currently, VW doesn’t sell an SUV smaller than the Tiguan in North America, leaving the door open for other brands to satisfy that market; this small SUV would give VW a foothold in that segment.
What will power this small SUV? We aren’t sure yet, but we’re guessing it probably isn’t an electric motor, or VW would be making a much bigger deal about it.
If Volkswagen wants to get into the small SUV segment, it’s going to have some heavy hitters to contend with — namely the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, and Toyota CH-R.
